Huddy Park is the oldest municipal park in Toms River. Interpretive signs throughout the park tell its story and why it is named Huddy Park. On March 24, 1782, Huddy led local militiamen in a fight to defend Toms River from an attack led by British soldiers and their Loyalist allies. Nine Patriots were killed and Toms River was torched and left in ruins. Huddy was captured and executed without trial. His unlawful hanging became an international incident that stalled the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which formally ended the American Revolution and created the world’s newest independent and democratic nation.
